Wigan’s historic Trencherfield Mill – undergoing a massive £35m
Parts of Trencherfield had been empty for decades but now, with swish new apartments and an arts and heritage centre set to open in 2010, the mill is firmly back in business. Mr Kimber said: "It was an honour to welcome Janet O’Neill to Wigan to see how we are shaping the future with the new Pier Quarter and its emphasis on arts, recreation, commerce and space for living. "Approval from the Royal Town Planning Institute is another reason for us all to feel proud of where we are as a community." As president of the institute, Janet O’Neill has pledged to support the next generation of planners and promote their development. Following her tour of the restored Mill, she met young planning officers from the council’s environmental services department. Ms O’Neill told them: "I’m keen to encourage the new generation of planners, who are choosing to work as public servants for the benefit of their local environment and community." The next stage of the refurbishments to Trencherfield Mill will see work to the grounds, including painting of the pumps and wheels. Recently a lighting scheme was installed to provide subtle and attractive coloured lights around the roof of the landmark building. more
London's famous coal power station about to get new, green lease
Air will be drawn up from the dome section through the higher towers to cool the higher residential apartments, which REO estimates will reduce energy demand from air conditioners on hot days by as much as two thirds.
The 38 acre, UK4 billion development is bound to meet with significant opposition, as have previous plans for the area. The modern design is likely to mobilize traditionalists, and the decision to use biofuel in the rebuilt generator will be difficult to defend given the emerging school of thought that says large-scale biofuel use does a lot more harm than good. Then there's the fact that the area itself is poorly served by public transport, which might require a 2-stop extention of the tube's Northern Line, to the tune of around UK347 million. It will be interesting to watch how the Lord Mayor reacts to the proposal. moreMayor: BC off track with dorm plan
The mayor stopped short of saying BC needs to back out of the apartment-building deal.
Asked if BC should abandon the apartments-to-dorm plan, Menino told the Herald, "They’ve purchased it. . . . I’ll always work with BC."
Menino is also upset that Boston College president William Leahy recently wrote to BC alumni, urging them to support the school’s 10-year master expansion plan and to lobby city officials to approve it.
cw-2 "It’s a little presumptuous," Menino said of the letter.
A spokesman for BC couldn’t be reached for comment yesterday. But BC has said in the past it hopes to work with the mayor on its building-expansion plans.
Some neighbors of Boston College have praised the university’s purchase of 2000 Commonwealth Ave., saying it will put students into a school-regulated dorm environment and get them out of nearby apartments. more
Seaboard apartments planned
Seaboard LLC filed preliminary site plans with the city to build 112 apartments in two five-story buildings at the mixed-use development on the northern fringe of downtown Raleigh off Peace Street. It could be the second major rental complex to sprout in downtown Raleigh. Apartment developers have been emboldened by a growing core of downtown employees and rising mortgage rates that make it harder for some would-be buyers to afford homes. The vacancy rate for inside-the-Beltline apartments dropped to a five-year low of 5.7 percent in January, according to Real Data of Charlotte. Meanwhile, plans to start One Eleven Seaboard, a 53-unit condominium project at Seaboard Station, have been delayed as pre-sales have slowed.Construction on the Seaboard apartments could begin before year's end and wrap up by early 2010, assuming the planning-approval process goes smoothly, says development partner Conan McClain of McClain Development. The project would compete with The Tucker, a 179-unit complex being built by Crosland less than a mile southwest at Boylan Avenue and Tucker Street. Both may face pressure from Gordon Smith, the founder of Raleigh's Exploris museum, who is pondering plans for 200 apartments a block east of City Market. The Tucker will benefit from an earlier opening, spring 2009, and location on the edge of downtown's popular Glenwood South district. The Seaboard apartments can boast their location amid a cluster of shops, a fitness center, restaurants and downtown's only grocery. more
Eight Knob Hill Apartments Destroyed in Birmingham Blaze
Flames destroyed eight Knob Hill apartments just off Valley Avenue in south Birmingham around 4:00 P.M. Thursday.
It took firefighters five hundred yards of hose and more than two hours to extinguish the blaze.
No one was injured in the fire, but several residents lost everything they had.
One woman who lived in the apartment with her two year old son watched in tears as her home continued to burn.
To make matters worse, she had lost all of her belongings at a previous apartment when it flooded.
Two residents ran around knocking on doors in the burning apartment building.
They helped one elderly woman out while the building was filling with smoke.
Birmingham Fire Marshal C.W. Mardis said it appears the blaze began in a second floor apartment, but the exact cause is under investigation. more
