Town Meeting voters reject Village

It would consist of 68 apartments and 82 condominiums, along with 122,000 square feet of retail space — including a small supermarket, a pharmacy and a restaurant — and 48,000 square feet of office space. The complex would also include a 5,000-square-foot senior center.

There would be 52 townhouse condominiums and 30 other condos with deed restrictions mandating buyers must be at least 55 years old. Eight of the deed-restricted condos would be classified as "affordable" under state guidelines, as would 14 of the rental apartments, and 70 percent of those units in each category — or five condos and 10 apartments — would be reserved for Newbury residents

Two of the articles required only simple majority votes to pass: The development agreement, and authorization for the selectmen to execute agreements with Newburyport should the city decide to provide water and sewer service to the project. more

Questions raised over social housing tenants living in luxury

A campaign group today questioned the logic of luxurious harbourside apartments being rented out to council tenants for as little as £75 a week. The brand new properties come with en-suite bathrooms, walk-in wardrobes, fitted kitchens and decked balconies overlooking Poole Harbour, Dorset. Private flats on the same development, called Harbour Reach, sell for around half-a-million or fetch around £900 per month in rent while council tenants are enjoying the same luxury for as little as £75 a week. Mark Wallace, campaign director at the TaxPayers' Alliance, said: "At a time when there is apparently a shortage of affordable housing, it seems an inappropriate use of resources to have such costly flats as part of the housing provision. "More people can be given essential help if these properties were sold and the money spent on more affordable flats and housing elsewhere. more

Possible Suspect Shot Dead by Victim of Robbery

Investigators say they were called to the Summer Oak apartments around 11:46 Sunday night.

The apartments are located in the 5300 block of the Arlington Expressway.

Officials say when they arrived they found Pinkney shot dead in the parking lot.

According to police, a man who lives in the apartments says Pinkney tried to rob him. That's when he told police he pulled a gun and shot the would be robber.

The JSO says they are questioning several people at the apartment building.

The State Attorney's Office is investigating whether this was a case of self defense.

Marriott Executive Apartments to double in three years

Marriott Executive Apartments have plans in the pipeline to nearly double the number of properties in the portfolio within the next three years to 31 in total.

Currently the upscale serviced apartment arm of Marriott International, operates 16 properties in Europe, Asia and the Middle East, and new properties are planned for destinations including Qatar, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and China.

Water ordeal for families

"At present, there are around seven families staying in the building and it was difficult for us to find new apartments. We tried to negotiate with the owner but he was not ready for it.

"As we want to pay the rent, we asked for an official receipt. But he was not willing to give us one. Instead, he was ready to give the receipt in plain paper without any official stamp, which was not acceptable to us."

Mr Vaidian said the families are now paying the rent through court.

"The landlord disconnected the water line in the building on Saturday," he added.

"We are forced to buy water from the private tanker by paying cash. We have informed the matter through our lawyer to the court and to the police."

Meanwhile, one of the three owners of the building, Jaffar Hassan said the water line was not disconnected. more
