Central Oregon dispatchers oversee busy fire season
Today's Bend Bulletin gives an insider's view of the dispatchers who staff the Central Oregon Interagency Dispatch Center in Prineville. The dispatch center is among the busiest in Oregon.
There are 18 dispatch centers across Oregon and Washington, but the Prineville center covers more ground and manages more fires -- usually between 400 and 450 -- than any other center in the state.
(Sam) McKenzie marked the potential smoke site on the map with a red arrow -- color coded to indicate the fire has been reported but hasn't been checked out yet -- and then started a new report for the fire on a neon-colored sheet of paper."We have that heavy swath (of lightning) that went right over the forest there," he said. He already had about a half-dozen yellow sheets keeping track of fires in the area, and a reconnaissance plane was just about to fly over to see if it could spot more blazes. more
South Bend schools receive funding for school improvements
The South Bend School Corporation gets the go-ahead for some major improvements to the tune of more than $36 million.
The Department of Local Government Finance said the school can move forward with the plan to build a new Marquette Montessori Academy, renovate Monroe Primary and make improvements to Clay and Washington High Schools.
The approval came just in time to make the July 1 deadline.
"Past July 1, the cost would've been prohibitive and we would have to go back to square one and re-configure and frankly I would doubt if we could even afford the projects," said Interim Superintendent James Kapsa.
Schools officials say a new building was definitely needed for the $8 million Marquette Montessori Academy.
"It was going to be very difficult to be able to retro-fit the program into the current school, so we'll be able to look at facilities that will be perfectly geared toward the design of the program," said Dr. more
Smoke from California wildfires drifts into Oregon
DEQ said particulate levels were high enough under federal standards to warrant labeling conditions as ''unhealthy for sensitive groups'' in Bend, Klamath Falls, Medford and Shady Cove. That included people with asthma and heart and lung diseases.
In Oregon itself, federal fire managers reported only three fires, and only one of those of any size, a 30,000-acre blaze in the far southeastern part of the state. California firefighters, however, continued to struggle with hundreds of fires.
DEQ said the smoke was spreading to the Salem and Portland areas, as well as southwest Washington. Later in the week, the department said, particulate levels could reach a level that's unhealthy for sensitive people.
