The "spine and hip" strategy confined the knees to a maximum bend of 20 degrees, but other joints could operate normally. And the "free" strategy allowed all joints to move freely. When a computer simulation of a man falling was given these constraints, it identified the free strategy as the least likely to break a hip. And it pinpointed the parachutist's style as the best way to allow the joints to move so the muscles dissipate energy and thereby lower the impact force. Ashton-Miller said future experiments and simulations will study women falling as well, and he expects the results to be similar. Strategies were tested with and without the use of an arm to help break the fall. And time delays of one-, two- and three-tenths of a second were simulated, along with the effects of age on muscle strength. more
Problems for extension plan
Cllr. Lorrraine Hillier said neighbours believe that this has led to a lack of visibility when approaching the tight bend of Elizabeth Road, adding that she believed it was an over intensive development. Other councillors gave no strong views, subject to review by the highways agency.
Councillors also objected to a planned first floor extension to 3a Norman Avenue, due to it being over intensive and having a detrimental effect on neighbouring properties.
Similar objections were raised over a front, rear and side extension to Windrush, on Elizabeth Road. Town mayor, Cllr. Gill Zakss said the plans were ‘huge’ and councillors agreed that it was an un-neighbourly and over-developed proposal.
Cllr. Barry Wood also raised the issue of a car parked on Upton Close covered with ‘garish’ advertising stickers, adding that it should be brought to police attention. more
Car crash sends two to hospital
The crash occurred at 12:42 p.m. on Highway 20, about 60 miles east of Bend, said Lt. Gregg Hastings.
Alex McCormick, 17, was driving east when he reached down for an object and drove off the shoulder and down an embankment. He tried to steer back onto the highway when the vehicle rolled several times, Hastings said. McCormick suffered minor injuries and was taken to an area hospital.
