The Ratings Racket
How badly do the major credit-rating firms have to perform before investors stop using their services? That's a trick question, because investors aren't allowed to stop using them. State and federal regulations that lock in the rating oligopoly remain untouched by recent "reforms."
The major credit-rating agencies – Standard and Poor's, Moody's and Fitch – assess the likelihood of default on corporate bonds and other debt instruments. Their famous failures in rating mortgage-backed securities have led to several recent efforts at reform. New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo struck a settlement with the big three requiring them to charge for preliminary research, not merely for a final rating. The hope is that they will not feel pressured simply to sell good grades to the issuers of the securities they rate. moreSouth Africa: Woods Casts Vast Shadow Over Rivals, Even When Absent
What is it about this man, particularly in Majors, that sets him apart? He proved with his 14th Major title that everything that has been written about him and spoken about him is an understatement; none of it is hype. Is there any other sports figure who can say that?
While it was clear that his damaged knee, which following an operation after the Masters had ruled him out of practising for the US Open, was not hindering his actual swing, it was clearly causing him discomfort. Besides that, who could have won one of the most sought- after titles in golf without practising for two months? Only one man. That man will be missing for the rest of the season. He knew the risks -- doctors had warned him against playing at Torrey Pines, saying he needed more time to recover and might aggravate the injury. moreJust the fact: The Commissioner's Trophy
Major League Baseball awards the Commissioner's Trophy each year to the team winning the World Series.
Designed by Lawrence Voegele of Owatanna, Minnesota, the trophy consists of 30 flags representing the 30 teams in North America's two top leagues, the National League and the American League. Two press pins set on the base of the trophy represented the two participating teams in that year's World Series. The Commissioner of Baseball presents the trophy to the ownership of the World Series-winning team. The trophy was first awarded in 1967, when the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Boston Red Sox. Unlike the Stanley Cup, which is passed down, year by year, to the champions of the National Hockey League, a new Commissioner's Trophy is created each year, much like the Vince Lombardi Trophy of the National Football League and the Larry O'Brien Trophy of the National Basketball Association. moreWhy is Apple slimming down OS X?
What may, at first glance, not seem like a major feature upgrade could actually prove revolutionary. The future version of the Safari Internet browser will allow users to save any Web site as a web application. This, combined with other improvements, could make Snow Leopard Apple's first major move into the realm of cloud computing, which is the assumed next stage of evolution for computers. With cloud computing, software is accessed from a Web page and your files are stored on your system, on the Internet or both.
In a way, users can already save Web apps by saving entire Web sites or portions of sites as web clips using Safari. Web clips are then launched as widgets, which are basically mini applications for things like clocks, calculators, translators and currency converters. more

Gold had a day without any major ups or downs after Monday's sell-off, but with a slow upward bias back toward the $900 mark that led to a finish at $889.40/oz., up $5.70. Overnight, gold has drifted lower.
Platinum was strong in the overseas markets, but sold off a late morning New York rally and stayed down, ending at its intraday low of $2012/oz., down $23. Overnight, platinum has been trending lower.
Silver failed to follow gold, declining after holding in positive territory until the noon hour, and closing at $16.65/oz., down 13 cents. Overnight, silver has edged higher.
Gold posted the gains that should be expected as oil rises and the dollar sinks, but holders of silver and platinum had to be disappointed that their favored metals failed to follow the yellow metal's lead. more
