Pope’s Nut Torte is a taste of the past

This copy is courtesy of Jill Allen, granddaughter of Mildred Hoppe, who worked for the Pope family for many years. The recipe is from a 1979 cookbook published by Pope's.

POPE'S NUT TORTE

Yield: 8 servings

2 tablespoons vinegar

1 teaspoon salt

3/4 cup (about 5 large) egg whites, at room temperature

1/8 teaspoon cream of tartar

1/2 cup packed brown sugar

1/2 cup granulated sugar

1/2 teaspoon vanilla

1/4 teaspoon almond extract

1/2 cup plus 2 tablespoons graham cracker crumbs

1/2 cup chopped pecans

1 large banana

2 cups whipped topping or 1 cup heavy cream whipped with 2 tablespoons powdered sugar

Maraschino cherries, for garnish

Toasted almonds or pecan pieces, for garnish

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. more

Martin optimistic on return

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Mark Martin couldn't keep the smile off his face yesterday afternoon in the Daytona International Speedway media center.

He sat next to Rick Hendrick, wearing a white polo with his future car number, 5, on the right chest. Martin threw his head back at one point, laughing loudly and overall enjoying the entire process.

It was an optimistic return to full-time racing for Martin, who will drive the Hendrick Motorsports No. 5 Chevrolet for the entirety of the 2009 season and 26 races in 2010. It's the second (so far) return to full-time racing after his vow in 2005 to get out of the grind.

"I don't know how to explain it to you, and I have no apologies for not knowing what my whole life holds for me," Martin said when asked why he was back, again. more

Waldport youth ‘catch the reading bug’

Director Jill E. Tierce hopes the one-hour programs, held every Wednesday at 10 a.m., will allow the children of Waldport to maintain their reading skills throughout the summer, until they return to school this fall.

The weekly programs will highlight a different activity or event every week, and are designed to encourage children to read. The Summer Reading Program is a function separate from the library�s regular preschooler story time, which will continue to be held on Thursdays at 10:30 a.m.

The Summer Reading Program features seven distinct performers. Charlie Brown appeared on June 18, and dazzled children with his comedic juggling feats. On June 25, storyteller Anne Glover will tell engaging, comedic stories, combining elaborate string figures, sign language, multi-culturalism, and other languages. more
