BASEBALL: Hawks best week of season
The Hawks finished off what was arguably their best week over the last five seasons on Friday with a doubleheader sweep of Heart of Iowa Conference rival Colo-NESCO at the Mike Penning Athletic Complex. But they didn't just beat the Royals. They thoroughly manhandled them, 17-5 and 14-5. The first contest ended after five innings. It was the culmination of a five-day span that saw South Hamilton (7-8, 6-5 HOIC) win four of five games by scoring 60 runs, an average of 12 runs an outing. "It's been a pretty good week," a modest Chris Crawford, South Hamilton's head coach, said. "Hitting is contagious and I think we've got a big case of it right now. "We expected a lot of positives this year from our team and we haven't had the record that we had hoped to have at this point. more
‘Mongol’ | 2 stars
Eight hundred years ago Khan united the Mongol hordes and created an empire to rival that of Alexander the Great. Clearly, this was a powerful and charismatic individual.</p><p>Not that you'd know it from the movie, an impressively mounted but dramatically inert melodrama inexplicably nominated this year for the foreign language Oscar.</p><p>Concentrating on the great warrior's first 30 years, “Mongol” follows the future Genghis Khan — as a youth he was known as Temudgin — from childhood through an adversity-filled adolescence and young manhood.</p><p>The son of a khan, or tribal chieftain, 9-year-old Temudgin is cast adrift when his father is murdered and he becomes the slave of the vengeful new khan. The boy spends several years as a beast of burden, a heavy wooden yoke locked around his neck.</p><p>The fully grown Temudgin (now portrayed by Japanese actor Tadanobu Asano) breaks free and finds Borte (Khulan Chuluun), the girl to whom he was betrothed years earlier. more
'Stormers Back in the Win Column, 42-33
In a hard fought game between Midwest Division rivals, the Iowa Barnstormers beat the Peoria Pirates, 42-33, before 8, 107 fans at Wellmark Blue Cross Blue Shield Field. Both teams now stand 4-8 on the 2008 af2 season.
The visiting Pirates struck quickly as QB Justin Rascati found a wide open Phillip Brock for a 24-yard touchdown pass as Peoria jumped to an early lead. The �Stormers quickly answered as Joe Brannen found Errick McCown on a crossing pattern for a score as the first quarter ended in a 7-7 tie.
Peoria quickly answered to start the second period as Rascati again hooked up with Brock on a 14-yard touchdown pass. A flurry of points then ensured as Robert Kilow caught a three-yeard TD pass, Terrance Freeney scored on a short run, and Jack Walker, Jr. picked off a Rascati pass and returned it for a �Stormers touchdown. more
