Billet families are encouraged to treat the volunteers like their own children, which may include giving them cleaning and other chore duties, she added.
While on their volunteering quests, participants are also encouraged to learn a second language and other useful skills.
"They're youths who are looking for a learning experience," said Dodd, also the resource development manager for the United Way of Sault Ste. Marie. "They learn about cultures across Canada."
Since 1977, more than 25,000 young Canadians have taken part in the Katimavik program. Its goal is to "form responsible citizens who will contribute significantly to Canadian society."
It's an excellent experience, said Dodd.
"I haven't met one (participant) yet that hasn't learned something new everywhere they went and met new friends."

My dad told me that the difference between teenagers and adults is that we tend to base decisions more on emotion and sentiment whereas adults are more likely to think things through logically, and so I've been surprised by some of the things written here on the Parenting section where most of you are adults about the "Octomom." (This section is grouped with Adolescent, so I read things here all the time). It seems like for purely emotional reasons people are advocating that her children be taken away, without thinking through the legal or financial ramifications. The state of California is on the brink of bankruptcy with severe budget cuts and layoffs, and really cannot afford to take on the enormous financial responsibility of raising 14 children. It was incredibly irresponsible of her to spend well over $100,000 on fertility treatment and bring 14 babies into the world without a feasible plan for raising them, and it makes me question her emotional stability, but there is no evidence of abuse or neglect, and if the state took away her children on these justifications alone they would be setting a dangerous precedence. Many parents are currently unemployed or at risk for foreclosure, many mothers are single, and many have made appallingly stupid decisions, but those aren't grounds for losing your kids. Do you think most people are advocating that her kids be taken away because they are appalled by her behavior and simply don't like this woman, or do you think there is a genuine and compelling reason for state intervention? Either by parent/legal guardian order or doctors if i'm voluntary? Also... If I refuse medication when i'm discharged, would that be grounds for my parents to put me back into inpatient? yes, i'm planning, i wont be an immediate danger to others or myself for months.. its all just putting it together at the moment, so i dont know if hospitalization is really required right now... i'm only self harming once or twice a week...the reason i dont want to go is because i dont believe it will help me, i dont really "want to get better" and theres no hope if i dont want it.
