Voting Question: Cure UTI without antibiotics?

Hey all Iv had a very severe UTI once before over a year ago. It sprung up over night and was indescribably painful. I was hospitalised and pumped full of morphine, so i know how serious they can be. Right now i have very, very light symptoms of a UTI (slight discomfort while passing urine and the frequent need to do so). However I just dont have the money for a doctors appointment right now, let alone antibiotics. If it gets worse of course I'll go but I was just wondering what I can do to get rid of it another way? Im currently drinking cranberry juice and lots of water. Does anyone know how long it would take to go away using this method and any other alternative treatments? Also, is it safe to have sex (protected of course) at the moment? I dont think it would cause me discomfort but would it make the infection worse? Last time the nurse told me it was safe to do so however I was on antibiotics at the time. Thanks Just to reiterate the symptoms are very slight and have improved since yesterday. Also just wondering can anyone give a rough estimate on the pirce of a course of antibiotics so I can try and put some money aside just incase? (I live in Australia and I dont have health insurance)  more

Voting Question: My cat has been on antibiotics for 6 days now and his UTI is still bad?

How long does it normally take for the medicine to work? He only has 4 more days of it and I'm afraid its not going to go away. I'm considering a homeopathic treatment after the antibiotics - has anyone had luck with these? Particularly UTI-Free from PetAlive.com?  more

Resolved Question: I think something is wrong with me?

A little over a month ago I came down with an upper respiratory infection and was on bed rest for 3 weeks. Right before that I started getting chronic yeast infections for no reason at all. I am married, therefore I don't have multiple sex partners, so that cant be the reason. Then the doctor said that I have vaginitis and gave me an antibiotic. The antibiotic did not help with the pain from the vaginitis at all. The only thing the antibiotic did was give me another yeast infection. I took a diflucan and the yeast infection (sort of) went away (that was two weeks ago). Then to make matters worse, this morning I woke up with a urinary tract infection. I'm also tired and lethargic all the time. I don't know why I keep getting sick. I'm starting to wonder if something is up with my immune system or if it's related to diabetes (I've never been diagnosed with diabetes, but it runs in my family) and the yeast infections and UTI's are common symptoms of it. I'm 27 years old. I don't smoke or drink. I'm not overweight. I eat right and excersize. I can't figure out why this stuff keeps happening to me. And I'm a veteran, so I go to the VA for my healthcare and honestly, the treatment isn't the best.  more

Voting Question: Anyone ever have an allergic reaction a day or two after stopping antibiotics?

I was put on Macrobid for a UTI and I told the doctor that the last time I took it I got hives two days after the treatment was over. She said that it was probably just a coincidence since if I had an allergy it would show up while on the antibiotic. So, again two days after stopping I am so itchy I can't stand it. I took Benadryl but I was curious if anyone else ever had a reaction after stopping meds and not while on them?  more

Voting Question: Recurrent UTI, don't know what else to do...?

For the first 2 years of my sexual life with my partner i would suffer UTI's on a regular basis, usually within 3 months apart of each other. I'd go to my doctor get a course of antibiotics, treat the infection, and try to prevent the next one. I have tried the following preventative measures Peeing before & after sex Keeping regular hygeine including wiping properly & washing with sensitive soap(QV brand) after intercourse drinking 2-3Lt a day but making sure bladder is empty before bedtime Cranberry capsules The infections reached a point where i was getting them monthly, it was a constant cycle of period, one to two weeks free, uti, weeks treatment, period and so on and so forth. At this point i saw a urologist who prescribed me preventative antibiotics to be taken daily. I also had an ultrasound of my bladder and kidneys which i was told were all clear and have been tested for chlamydia & Gonoreah both were negative The antibiotics worked fine providing I kept me fluid intake up from nov 2008 til about a month ago when i had my first true attack in as many as 6 months. To date my most painful experience in my life. I treated it at first with trimethroprim a 7 day course, however at the end of this course i still had very mild symptoms. So i saw my urologist who prescribed me another more powerful antibiotic a 5 day course I finished this and had started to feel normal. I went back to taking my preventative antibiotic which the doctor also changed since the other had become ineffective, With in a few days an uncomfortable feeling in my abdomin/bladder returned, it was not the full symptoms of a uti there was no burning sensation, blood in urine, frequent urgency. Just a discomfort like very slight feelings of needing to urinate, it only seems to come at the end of the day when i finished drinking all my water and my bladder is most likely empty. At the present this feeling has not gone away, i cannot see my urologist for another 2 weeks so i have got a repeat of the strong antibiotics given to me by the urologist. I'd really like to know if anyone else is going through the same hell as me? What other diagnosis tests can be done? my doctor doesn't seem interested in finding out if there are any other causes for my persistent recurrent attacks.  more

Voting Question: Why do I still have Nitrate and Leukocytes present in my urine dipstick test after antibiotic treatment ?

I have recently had what was diagnosed as Urinary Tract Infection, with the associated symptoms of burning, frequency and pain on urination. I was given antibiotics and I have completed the course but I still have nitrate and leukocytes present when I dip my urine. The symptoms of the UTI have gone but the dipstick test remains the same and I also have a feeling of irritation 'down below'. Anybody any ideas ? x  more

Resolved Question: I didn't know I was pregnant and I was sick so I had to be on antibiotics for a couple of weeks.?

This is my second pregancy. When I was sick back in January I didn't know that I was pregnant yet. A couple of weeks ago I had UTI so the doctor had to give me another treatment of antibiotics! Now I am 17 weeks pregnant and today my doctor had the results of some tests they usually do at this stage of pregancy and seems that one of this test ( the one for down syndrome ) was slightly abnormal. Now I am very scared and I am questioning of the medicines I took could lead to this. I will have to do a sonogram soon to see exactly what's going on. There is not history of abnormalities in my family nor my fiance's family. I really hope they was wrong.  more

Resolved Question: Is it a Kidney infection or stones?

I got treated for UTI with antibiotics this past week. I experienced lower back pain and cloudy urine. I'm already finished with the treatment and my lower back still hurts especially on my left side. What could it be? I can't even bend over because it hurts, it hurts even when i'm sitting down and I put my head down. What could it be?  more

Resolved Question: Treating a yeast infection during pregnancy?

I had a yeast infection and did a store-brand 7-day treatment. Then my clinic called and said i had a UTI and needed to take antibiotics. So i'm on Amoxicillin for 10 days. I had an appointment yesterday and the midwife asked if i had any discharge so i said yes, there has been some discharge but not alot. And only minor itching occasionally. So she gave me a prescription for Gynazole cream, the 1-day treatment. I've read lots of places that the 1-day treatment is not safe during pregnancy , is this true? Has anyone's doctor given them Gynazole for a yeast infection during pregnancy? I'm worried since it's a "pregnancy category C medication" any thoughts?  more

Resolved Question: Symptoms returning after treatment for UTI?

I had a UTI a little more than a week ago, took the full course of antibiotics the doctor prescribed and the symptoms have not gone away. I now have a backache, bloated belly and the same burning and urge to go symptoms. Why hasn't the antibiotics cleared my UTI yet?  more

Voting Question: Abnormal Pap Smear Questions?

For the past 3 years I have experienced constant vaginal and anal itching and itching up my butt crack. The itching seems to be a "pin point" itching usually in the same spots. The itching is constant, it doesnt go away and then come back, it's always there. I also experience heavy white odorless discharge and i feel like I queef a lot even when i dont engage in sex. I visited the OB-GYN countless times and have been treated for fungal infections (clotrimazole and terazol creams) to bacterial infections (treated with anti-biotics). A fungal culture was done after I took antibiotics for UTI and came back positive... 1 month later did another fungal culture after treatment and it was negative. The itching persists... I had a pinworm test that came back negative. I had chlymidia and ghonnorea tests done and all were negative. OB-GYN said that my vagina looks normal... OB-GYN referred me to the general doctor about the anal itching... regular doctor found no hemmorhoids but agrees that the area is red. GP referred me to the dermatologist... Dermatologist said he "sees nothing" and that stress is causing me to itch. Got a call from OB-GYN saying my pap smear was abnormal and showed LSIL and dysplasia... scheduled for a colposcopy on April 30 of this year. Got a pamphlet in the mail saying the abnormal paps are usually caused by HPV. Last pap smear I had was in 2006 and it showed normal. I know pap smear is not a diagnostic test, but if I do have HPV is this causing the itching, the discharge, and possibly the queefs? I am really distressed over this and upset with KAISER PERMANENTE for not pushing STD tests more than they do. I had to demand an HIV test and when I asked for it they said to me "Why would you want an AIDS test, do you think you have it?" The HIV test was negative I didn't know how important getting pap smears were and I am upset that kaiser didn't notify me to take one again after 2006... maybe I could have been diagnosed earlier? Should I be angry? Is this my fault? I have been going to the doctor's for this problem for years now, why is this happening? I know a colposcope is used to actually see on the cervix and make a diagnosis... but can a doctor visually make a diagnosis of VAGINAL dysplasia without special microscope? I am just afraid that my doctors have overlooked this and not checked out my vaginal area thoroughly. I have looked at myself in the mirror and although i don't see obvious big lesions, there are tiny bumps and i don't know if this is normal or not.. I am sick of these doctors jerking me around, I want to know what's going on!!! Is the colposcope going to be able to see not only stuff on my cervix but on the vaginal walls and my outer vulva? I tell them about this itching, they don't even swab any solution on to make abnormalities show on the skin. I thought the dermatologist would do this but he Quickly looked over me and determined it was nothing. He said vaginal area looks normal too... On top of that I just started a new relationship with someone 4 months ago... we use condoms all the time except 1 time we didn't. I am afraid he is going to aquire this itchy butt i have and itchy genitals. I am paranoid and i am always looking to see if he is itching himself. Since i found out about the abnormal pap i wasn't sure how to tell him. I finally did tell him and the first thing he said was "Is it HPV?" and i said i don't know until i get this colposcopy. Obviously he knows what HPV is... I asked him if hes experiencing anything abnormal down there and he said no. I was in a 2 year relationship with someone before that while i have had this itching and he also said he never experienced any itching. I don't know if this is related or not but I have had 2 pelvic ultrasounds that showed cysts in my ovaries. WTF is going on with me? Kaiser never ev Kaiser never even offered the Giardisil shot, i have had to probe for answers about it. They also say they dont test for HPV in women under 30. WTF??? If they are going to take biopsies, are these biopsies going to be tested for HPV? What is going on with my body, i just want the itching to go away Also, I am a 22 year old female and i have been experiencing this since I was 19-20 years old. I have had just about 10 sexual partners in my life... a lot of them I have had unprotected sex with (i just want to kick myself). None of my previous sexual partners have ever come back to me and say they have itching or anything. A lot of them I am still friends with and have contact with. Are they afraid or embarassed of the itch???  more

Resolved Question: Yeast infection, pink discharge, period just ended a week ago... 25y/o?

Okay, I have had a yeast infection in the past and it was fairly mild, it cleared up on its own. This time I wasnt that lucky. I was on antibiotics for a beriod of 10 day sand it was a heavy antibiotic. the day after I stopped it I started with a yeast infection! i waited a day to see if it would feel better on its own, and it didnt. I went to the grocery stroe and got AZO pills for it as well as the OTC genaric 3 day treatment. I started the three day treatment on saturday. The first one went fine at least I thought it did.. I had not had sex and was very careful with it, I didnt scratch or anything. (you are supposed to take them at night). The next morning all was fine, then half way through the day yesterday (easter) I went to the restroom and when I wiped it looked ike I had blood mixed with the cream. The stuff that I got was not a suppository it was a cream you inject up there. Anyways it looked like the cream hadmixed with blood somehow and I have a creamy pink discharge now coming out. The yeast infection is feeling better as far as itching is concerned, but it burns slightly now instead. I know the blood is not from a UTI as it is mixing with the cream and the cream is inserted at the top where your cervixs is located. Anyways I took dose number 2 last night, and before hand my husband who knew abotu the problem wanted to try out a new toy he had just gotten (anal hook)... He messed up and got it in the wrong hole.... Long story short, after cleaning and showering I used dose number two, and the pink discharge is back again this morning... It is like well mixed somehow with the cream.. I just ended my period a week ago yesterday as I started my new BC pack.. I have no other symptoms, everything else seems fine, but I know the bleeding is not normal atleast form what I know.... Any information or advice? I am a very clean person, and this issue is making it relaly bad. I did not let the infection go until I had alot of discharge in the first place, that had just started when I started the cycle of medication for it...  more

Voting Question: Is it possible to get rid of a UTI on your own?

I've been getting frequent re-occurring urinary tract infections in the past year. I know that the only real treatment is antibiotics and I've taken them once when I had an infection that was really bad. Other than that, I get mild UTI symptoms that will go away completely for weeks when I make sure to drink enough water. My question is: Did I fight the infection off on my own, is it something other than a UTI, or is the infection constantly present but just flaring up when I'm dehydrated?? Yes, I know all about cranberry juice and vitamin C. No, there is no possibility of an STD.  more

Resolved Question: How long does the UTI treatment last?

I few days ago I had a horrible pain and all UTI symptomes, that haven't let me sleep the whole night. In the morning I went to the doctor and she prescribed me some antibiotics, Cotrimoxazol AL forte. It's the third day I take the medicine. Yesterday evening I had again this horrible pain and I took one more pill of the antibiotics*(I have to take them once in 12 hours, I took in the difference of 4 hours, cause I couldn't stand it anymore). In the morning everything was ok, but now I feel a disscomfort in vagina, does it mean that bacterias moved and evaluated? Or is this just must happen during the treatment? Please help me..  more

Resolved Question: Help! UTI only lasts 2hrs & is reoccurring?

I've gotten these "UTI" 's for about 6yrs and they come and go. I was talking to one of my girlfriends and she said hers last for a few days/until she gets medical treatment, but mine only last 2-3hrs and come back often (1/2x per month). I try going to the doctors and getting different opinions, but i pretty much here the same thing :( vicoden (sp?) USED to make the pain go away and help me sleep, but tonight i took 3 (i'm 5ft3in and 160lbs) and it didn't work at ALL! i'm not sure what else to do! i was told a while ago by a specialist that it was a bladder or kidney infection (can't remember which) and went on antibiotics which made the UTI's go away for a little while. I'm sick of spending money on co-pays! And by the time i go to the doctor my symptoms have gone away b/c they don't last. Nothing helps and the only thing that actually does is sitting on the toilet (sry it's gross). i sit here doing hw or on my laptop for a few hrs until the actual burning pain goes away and then it only hurts for a few days when i pee. the symptoms are: burning during and immediately after, annoying discomfort during the actual few hours, sometimes feeling hot and cold at the same time (fever/chills?) and more. sometimes, not all the time though, i get it a little while after having unprotected sex with my fiancee (we have a faithful relationship). i have been tested for STD's and that's not an issue. Does anyone have the same problem as i do? Please help me! And thanks for the feedback!  more

Resolved Question: Will a urinary tract infection go away naturally?

I have reason to believe I have a UTI. I have all the symptoms except for 'pain'. There is a 'pinching' sensation, almost like you have to pee really REALLY bad but your bladder is empty, but not anything painful or unbearable. Which is why, I am hoping with time, it can just go away. Is this at all possible, or is a trip to the doctor the only treatment? Antibiotics isn't really an option for me at this point so I was wondering what my chances are. Please don't just say 'go to a doctor' because I can't, plain and simple.  more

Voting Question: Painful UTI wont go away?

I have had a painful UTI( urinary tract infection) for 2 & a half months now, Ive been Given antibiotic after antibiotic from my dr, & i keep telling her ive become immune to the treatment. then she ignores me when i tell her that the stuff she does give me I have allergic reactions to & end up in the hospital. I cant change doctors again as ive done it too many times already & my insurance is getting tired of it, ( im on medicaid) & when she gives me CIPRO,( for the infection) it just does not work. what can i do naturally to end this? I read that something called D- Mannose kills this infection but what is it? & how do I obtain it, ( ok I did hear it was a sugar) but, still not sure what it is.. Is there anything I can do?? Ive had gallon after gallon Of pure cranberry Juice, cranberry Pills, & other stuff that just is not working.. Im at a point where, I just don't know what to do.. im in severe pain. I need something fast, something that actually works. As ive said above, Cranberry Juoce does not help as ive drank 5, 64 Ounce Bottles this past 2 weeks alone, i need a better suggestion! the stuff im drinking has no sugar? what is this D-Mannose stuff? How do I get it? I mean cranberry Juice.  more

Resolved Question: Taking Antibiotics for a UTI now I have a cold. Is all my "good bacteria" gone?

I actually got a cold 2 weeks ago... Then during the last phase of my cold I got a bladder infection. Home treatment wasn't working... My friend had amoxicillan on hand that she hadn't used so I started taking that... After a week of antibiotics it was still not getting any better. Another source told me that I was not taking the correct kind of antibiotics and I need to go to a DR.... I have an appointment coming up in a couple days for the UTI. I've been off the amoxicillan for 2 days now and today I woke up with a cold AGAIN. I usually don't get sick at all... Is this all relative to each other? Did I get sick because I was on antibiotics for so long? I've already slapped myself on the wrist for taking meds that weren't prescribed to me.... But I was in pain and desperate.  more

Resolved Question: Is this an STD or other infection?

I am waiting on an appointment with my doctor, so I want an opinion in the meantime. Last week I started experiencing a white watery discharge from my penis, and extreme pain while urinating. It got so bad that if I had a spontaneous erection during the night (stopped all sexual activity) it was just so painful. I can't get in to see the doctor until later this week and I expect antibiotics for either chlamydia or a UTI. Thing is, now the symptoms are quickly going away. I didn't think that you could fight these infections without treatment, so I am wondering if I should be concerned about a totally different condition. What questions should I bring when I see my doctor this week?  more

Resolved Question: How many women know the facts about circumcision?

Circumcision is not recommended by any national medical association in the world. Fifteen national and international medical associations have extensively studied infant circumcision and its effects and found no significant evidence to support this practice. In March 1999, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) concluded that infant circumcision is not recommended as a routine procedure. The circumcision policy statements of the American Medical Association (AMA) and the American Academy of Family Physicians have concurred with this position The prepuce (foreskin) makes up as much as half of the skin system of the penis. It is an extension of the shaft skin that folds over onto itself, completely covering and protecting the glans (an internal organ) and provides the mobility of the shaft skin necessary for frictionless intercourse and masturbation. The foreskin has three known functions: protective, immunological, and sexual. It contains about 10,000 highly specialized nerve endings and several feet of blood vessels. An adult male foreskin, if unfolded and spread out, would be about the size of index card (3 x 5 inches), much more than a “little piece of skin.” Many sexually active men circumcised in adulthood report a significant decrease in sexual pleasure and comfort because of the loss of sensitive nerve endings, skin mobility and natural lubrication. For the care of an intact penis, the AAP recommends, “Leave it alone.” No special care is required – an intact child should have the external surface of his penis (and the rest of his body) washed regularly to keep clean. When a male is older and can retract his foreskin (which typically occurs by puberty), a simple rinsing is all that is necessary. Other cultural myths about special cleaning procedures are just that – myth. Overall, urinary tract infections (UTI) occur at about the same rate in male and female infants during the first six months of life. Regardless of circumcision status, infants who present with their first UTI at months (or less) are likely to have an underlying genitouninary abnormality. In children with a normal underlying anatomy, a study found as many circumcised infants with a UTI as those who retained their foreskin. The appropriate treatment for UTI, in males as well as females, is antibiotics, not prophylactic excision of the prepuce. According to the AAP, “Urinary tract infections are usually not life threatening and are easily treated in most cases.” Breastfeeding provides some measure of protection against UTI during the first six months of life. While circumcision is a relatively quick procedure, it is extremely painful for the infant. The initial part of the process involves a forced separation of the foreskin, which is fused to the glans (head) in much the same way as a fingernail is joined to the finger. The AAP says the following about EMLA cream, one of the most common pain relief methods, “The analgesic effect is limited during the phases associated with extensive tissue trauma…” Although they cannot remember the pain as adults, circumcised male infants have increased pain response in vaccinations 4 to 6 months later. Circumcision appears to lower the pain threshold. Circumcision removes the protective portion of mobile shaft skin, which is intended to cover the glans (head) of the penis. The glans is the internal portion of genitalia (for both genders). Circumcision artificially exposes and denudes this highly sensitive tissue, resulting in a buildup of keratin and a dry, densensitized part of the penis. And contrary to popular myth, more sensation does not lead to control problems. Based on reports from men circumcised as adults, just the opposite is true. With more sensation, a man has better feedback and can better determine his proximity to the “orgasmic threshold.” Some studies show that circumcision has a slight preventive effect for AIDS and some STDs; however, other studies show an insignificant or opposite effect, especially for chlamydia. The bottom line: sexual practices have a much greater effect on the chance of becoming infected than circumcision status. If someone acts on the misconception that circumcision alone will protect them, they are taking unwise chances. why do some women ever consider mutilating their children? It is barbaric, and disgusting. judging from the responses so far, you have chosen to not educate yourselves on circumcision at all, and are quite comfortable mutilating your children without any scientific evidence to support your actions. do you feel the same way about female circumcision? so how is an unnecessary, and sexually prohibitive surgery, NOT mutilation? as for copy and pasting, would you prefer that i had typed it all myself? doesnt it make more sense to copy the FACTS rather than create my own?  more

Resolved Question: peeing blood, history of UTI's, abdominal pain that won't go away after treatment?

My daughter is 16, she has a history of UTI (5 in the last year). She was recently seen in the ER for peeing blood, and abdominal pain. The urinalysis did show puss, blood, and bacteria. She was given antibiotics for 5 days. That was a week ago...she is still peeing blood, still having pain. Another urinalysis yesterday still showed infection, and she was given another round of antibiotics. She has an appt with a Urologists in 2 weeks. What could this be?  more

Resolved Question: I am pretty sure I have a UTI, do I NEED to see a doctor?

Alright, me and my girlfriend have been together for a few months and have been having sex a few times a week (we ALWAYS use a condom). Last night we had sex and when I woke up this morning to pee, everything was going fine for the first few seconds until all of the sudden my Urethra started to burn inside the tip of my penis. I have been reading up and I think I have a Urinary tract infection. Unfortunately all the sites I read seem to only give advice to women. I am only 18 so I don't have an abundance of money to throw at a doctor for treatment. I do however, have about a dozen AMOXICILLIN 500MG pills that I got a few months ago. Can I just take three of those a day to get rid of the UTI, or is this really a serious situation that I NEED to see a doctor for. I know the obvious answer is to see a doctor, but I know all he is going to do is prescribe antibiotics. As far as prevention goes, I have read that I should drink plenty of water to "flush out the system" But this would make me pee more often. As you probably know, it is very painful to pee, and the less I pee right now the happier I am. Any and all advice is welcome on this one.  more

Voting Question: What can be causing lower middle back pains?

Last Thursday I went to the doctor for treatment of BV(Bacterial Vaginosis). He gave me two antibiotics (Flagyl & Doxycycline) I am not sure why he gave me two I didnt even realize it until i picked up my prescription but other then that the meds have helped a lot. Anyways my question is since Wednesday I have been having lower middle back pain (no other pains anywhere else). I didnt mention is to the Dr. because I thought It was just because of the way I slept and it would go away but now it is Tuesday and am still having the pain. I never had back pain before so it seems really weird. I did some research and only thing I can come up with is maybe a UTI? Do you think it might be a UTI caused by the Infection? I am going back to the Dr. on Monday because there is no way I am going to be taking 3 meds right now at once, it's hard enough taking only 1 lol. Does anyone know what may be causing the lower middle back ache? It is so annoying!  more

Resolved Question: If a UTI is resistant to Bactrim once, will all future UTIs be resistant to Bactim?

Im young woman in my early 20s. I have frequent UTIs since I was about 17. Last year I had a UTI and was prescribed Bactrim for 1 week from my Dr. I still had symptoms when the week was over and called my Dr back. They said my urine culture was resistant to Bactrim and gave me something different and referred me to a urologist. I have take Nitrofuritonin as well as Cipro and both have worked effectively. I hadnt had a UTI for over a year and just got one again. I called and asked for an antibiotic presciption over the phone because it costs me about $300 for a urine culture (even tho i have insurance). The same Dr who prescribed Bactrim last time and found it to be resistant, prescribed me Bactrim again for this present UTI. If it was resistant a year ago, is that specific to that case, or would I be resistant now as well? I am confused why she would prescribe this when I reminded the nurse of this over the phone. I am on my second day of treatment and still no relief of symptoms.....  more

Resolved Question: Any suggestions to treat chronic UTI in 84 y.o in long term care?

I am a nurse and I have a patient who has a chronic history of UTI's and even post-antibiotic treatment the urine remains green and turbid. She does not drink enough fluids which is part of the problem and I believe her last abd. ultrasound was unremarkable. Any ideas/suggestions? It was obtained via I&O cath. The use of cranberry tabs does not have significant supportive evidence as to the effectiveness. She already is resistant to several abx therefore to put her on a low dose would chance her eventually becoming resistant to yet another antibiotic. Finally, you cannot force a demented person to drink. I wish we could because that would stop the nurses/doctors in hospitals looking down their noses at us working in long term care *LOL*  more

Resolved Question: Going to Doctor for UTI?

I know they make you pee in a cup to test for a UTI but can i refuse the test and still get antibiotics. I hate going to the doctors and i think that is really akward to pee in a cup there. So can I refuse the test? I honestly don't care about what bacteria is there I just want the treatment.  more

Resolved Question: Where can I buy Naxcel, Primor Tablets, or Zeniquin tablets for my dog (who has UTI)? Is it safe?

My dog has trouble urinating, but earlier this morning he did, for almost five minutes. Money is a little tight for my family to spend on, so we want to find another way to help our dog before going to the vet. I found this website where it suggest some types of antibiotics: http://www.pfizerah.com/health.aspx?country=US&species=CN&lang=EN&drug=CT&t=2069&key=292&type=3&sec= and I'm not sure if it's safe to use and where I can purchase it. If anyone knows anything about these treatments, please let me know if it works, where i can buy it, and if it's safe.  more

Resolved Question: do my b/f and i have to wear a condom while he is takin an antibiotic for a uti?

My b/f called me and said he went to the er because he had a little discharge and tingling when he pees. He said they treated him for a uti and said it was probably from drinking so much alcohol. Then he said that they told him to use condoms during the antibiotic treatment. It sounds more like an std to me, but does anyone know if these are common symptoms and treatment advice.  more

Resolved Question: Are there any natural remedies/cures for STI's?

In the summer I was infected with NGU, and treated. Some how it didn't go away, so I went back to the doctors for another treatment. This is over a period of a few months up until now (thought I had a UTI, bladder infection, or something along those lines). After the second time of being treated, it still has not went away. I followed all of the instructions given to me by the doctor, and everyone I had relations with was informed. I have not had sex since, so I know I didn't come back into contact with the bacteria. I'm starting to think I was either misdiagnosed, or they aren't doing something right for me. I've done my research and have the antibiotics names, and I'm wondering if it's possible to obtain these, or if there is any other way of getting rid of these nasty little buggers on my own. Any herbal remedies/ drugs out there for this? I honestly do not want to go back to the doctor.  more

Voting Question: How long should I wait after a UTI treatment?

to have sex and masturbate again? I don't want to aggravate it. I drank antibiotics, for ten days, and finished yesterday. Should I wait another week?  more

Voting Question: Can a body get rid of a UTI by itself?

I had a urinary tract infection last night... symptoms were very strong (urgency, frequency, discomfort, blood in urine, etc the whole nine yards), I couldn't sleep, and felt horrible. By 5am I finally fell asleep, and by the time I woke up at 10-11am, I felt completely fine, with no symptoms. I went to the doctor anyway, and got antibiotics to treat UTI's, and I know I should have asked the MD then, but I didn't think of it at the time... the only thing she said was that it's really strange that my symptoms are gone, and that my body must be violently fighting the infection... So my question is, can your immune system get rid of a UTI by itself? Cause everyone says that once you get it, you need treatment ASAP or it will lead to horrible complications..  more

Resolved Question: Help! UTI and bleeding?

I have had my fair share of UTI's so I always know what they are and what I need to do. I went to a clinic yesterday for treatment and was given a 3 day course of antibiotics. My problem is that I am having what I think is an abnormal amount of bleeding as a result. The blood started off looking a little bit like a period, but my period just ended on the 6th and is not due yet. Now everytime I wipe after going to the bathroom, I wipe away a good amount of bright to deep red blood. Is this type of bleeding normal with a UTI? I have had blood in my urine as a result of one once before but nothing like this. I have only taken 2 of my antibiotics so far so I was thinking of finishing the treatment before worrying too much. I just want to know if anyone has experienced this or if I should be looking for a different cause of the bleeding.  more

Voting Question: ****~~Question About V Infections! @*#^@&(*(@$@(&#@?

Thanks for reading my question. Here's the deal: I have recurring UTIs since I was much younger, (20 now) I knew I had symptoms so I went to the dr & got antibiotics. UTI seemed to have went away but about a week later I noticed symptoms of a yeast infection. I read that antibiotics are often the cause of these, so I bought Monistat 1Day treatment & symptoms again, went away on time (about 3days). I took the Monistat on Saturday night.. Now I have clear, thin discharge with a strong odor. Do I have a BV now!? I don't understand what is going on. Could it be trich? I just got tested for STIs but they only listed Chlamydia, Gonorrhea & HIV. Any idea what is going on? I have no health insurance, btw. Any help or advice is much needed. Thank you in advance!!! :) No, I was with my ex boyfriend for almost three yrs but I caught him cheating recently which is the reason as to why I got tested for STIs. I am currently without a new partner until I am completely sure I am safe. Any more advice?  more

Resolved Question: Complications after UTI, help!!!!!?

Thanks in advance. Three months ago, I drank a lot of alcohol and, got sick. Three days later, I have a UTI, and a sinus infection. They gave me levaquin for 7 days, everything cleared up fine within two days. After finishing the medicaiton, I had unprotected sex with my new G/F for the first time (I am a 30 year old male) and she is STD free, as well as I, we have been checked when this happened to rule that out. The next day, I had pain while urinating, and cloudy urine. I call the doctor, they gave me Cypro for two weeks. Cleared it up in a few days. At the end of the antibiotic course, I had unprotected sex with my G/F again, as I was "fixed", two days later, symptoms return. The doctor says it could be NSU, or non-specific urethritis, so he prescribes me Tetracyline for 10 days. Immediatly, I felt better. Three days pass after finishing antibiotic treatment, I'm fine, no urination issues. Then, I had unprotected sex again, three days later (NSU is almost instentanious I am told but could be wrong) I had very little urine output today, then it turned cloudy. No pain yet, but I am thinking the issue is not solved. My doctor wants to refer me to a urologist, however thanks to the economy, I am between jobs and cannot afford it. On the advise of a friend, I took GSE today (Grape-Fruit-Seed-Extract) ast it is "nature's antibiotic" a citricidal if you will. I start urinating fine. No pain, no cloudy urine. Can anyone, somewhere, offer any insight? The only background I can give is male UTI's run in my family. Again, any insight would be greatly appreciated. I'm scared to death, and so is my G/F. I really hope it's not bladder cancer, again, I can't afford a specialist now.  more

Resolved Question: Can I take a yeast infection treatment even if I'm not sure it's present?

I've never had a yeast infection before, but it seems like I'm dealing with a lot of the symptoms. Mostly burning and pain with urination, no discharge or itching. After 2 rounds of antibiotics in the past month it would certainly make sense. I know it's not an STI, although it may be a UTI or kidney stone, I've had those in the past. But I'm not sure and can't see my doctor for at least another day, can I take an over-the-counter treatment even if I'm not certain? Is it safe?  more

Resolved Question: If I have a UTI can i pass it to my husband. Should he also be treated.?

I just had a urinary infection and got my antibiotics. Feeling much better. But somebody said that my husband must have passed it to me and he should also be treated. My doc did not mention anything. We want to conceive soon so just wanted to know if we both need treatment.  more

Resolved Question: Can a uti go away by itself or with little treatment?

Can a uti go away by itself or with little treatment? last week i went to the dr. and had a urine sample taken and they said i had a uti and gave me amoxicillian. well i took one of the pills and then went out of town and forgot to bring the antibiotic with me. for a few days i had cloudy urine and a little bit of a smell, but now it seems like all the symptoms are gone and i feel fine. so did it just go away even though i only took 1 pill? im 15 btw. thanks!  more

Resolved Question: What am I doing wrong? 3 UTI's since June?

Has anyone had this problem using an Allflex diaphragm with Gynol spermicide? Since June I've had 3 UTI's and had to be on antibiotics- and I'm allergic to each Rx my doctor gives me! I wash the hell out of the diaphragm before and after using it, I never leave it in more than 12 hours or so, and also use condoms. I try to be as sanitary as possible with the diaphragm but for some reason I keep getting infections! I don't want to take any more antibiotics, I'm afraid I'll build up a tolerance to them and one day if I have a really serious infection, God forbid, it'll be resistant to treatment. I don't have any other BC options and don't trust condoms by themselves. Some people didn't get it when I said I have no other BC options. I can't take the pill, just leave it at that. I can't use an IUD because I have awful cramps as it is every month, and that would exacerbate them. I can't have my tubes tied because I don't think my insurance will pay for it until I'm 40. The only other thing I can think of is just being celibate until after menopause but I don't think my boyfriend would appreciate that.  more

Resolved Question: Will I be waived from the PRT because of a possible kidney infection and an overactive thyriod?

I'm in the Navy and October is the PRT month. I was currently diagnosed with a possible kidney/urinary tract infection (UTI). I'm taking doxycycline (an antibiotic) for it. I was also diagnosed with an overactive thyriod, I haven't gotten treatment for it yet, because I have to see an endocyrnologist. But the doctor is currently treating the side effects which are high blodd pressure and rapid heart rate (84 beats per minute, resting) and hand tremors. For that I'm taking atenolol (beta blocker). So my question is, am I going to be waived from any part of the PRT? Thanks.  more

Resolved Question: Need advice on how to get rid of a UTI infection.?

I have had symtoms for a week now. I get UTI infections alot, I never took antibiotics for treatment because I just recently found out that UTI infections are serious, I was always told that they are no big deal and everyone gets them. I bought AZO but that gave me bad side effects so I stopped. I would like to get antibiotics but dont know if I can just go in to a pharmacy to get them, I dont have health insurance so I dont want to go see a doctor because that will be to expensive. Does anybody know if I can purchace antibiotics at a pharmacy.  more

Voting Question: Does this sound like a yeast infection?

In the past I have had a few UTI's but the more I think about it, the more I'm beginning to think they started as a yeast infection and progressed to UTI's. Here's my issue now, For the past couple months It's been burning when I urinate and it's really sore in general. I was on antibiotics for an infection (which turned out not to be an infection) of a navel piercing. I was on one medication for a week (Levaquin) and another for a second week (we thought the infection wasn't going away) During this period of time I drank MASSIVE (1of the bigger OceanSpray bottles a day) amounts of 100% cranberry juice which typically when I get the inkling I might be getting a UTI. After the first day I drank the C-juice i felt completely fine no burning etc, but after that it became worse. So this went on for like another week so I decided to try some yeast infection medicine I tried the WalGreens brand 1 day treatmeant right after I applied it, it hurt really bad, but each day has got progressively better, This is now the fourth day after yeast infection treatment and it seems to be at a standstill. It's much better than it was, but it still burns a little when I urinate and it's still sore. My urine is about this: http://asymptotia.com/wp-images/2007/01/yellow_rose.jpg color. Should I try some more yeast infection treatment? I would also like to say I've been tested for STDs recently and that's not the issue.  more

Resolved Question: Anyone using colloidal silver as a therapeutic treatment for UTI?

I get urinary tract infections all the time and am tired of taking antibiotics all the time. A friend suggested taking colloidal silver. I have heard many good things but one of the side effects is turning blue but only if you take too much. Is this true? So i was just looking for some feed back from other people taking this product or know about it.  more

The art of anticipation

It's famous for not talking to journalists and in a world where businesses clamber for their ear, treating journos mean seems to keep them keen.

The three-storey Apple store in the middle of Sydney was hidden behind boards until the day it opened. Rumours circulated about the astronomical fitout costs, and those passing by would strain for a glimpse of the store. The only reason Sydney-siders knew as much as they did was that the plans were submitted to Sydney City Council (parts of the plans had to become publicly available).

So what can small businesses learn from Apple's strategy?

Let's not forget that Apple is in a position of power. Its last products have been big hits, and consumers are keenly awaiting the first 3G iPhone. It has a strong track record when it comes to delivering on anticipation. more

Police probed after Middlesbrough flats death

Police are not treating the death as suspicious.

Sherrie McPhearson, 25, who saw the horror unfold, said: "I first noticed a guy sitting on the top of the window with his legs out, but it looked like he went back in.

"I don't know if he was dragged back in or if he fell back in. As he was sitting there he looked like he was talking to someone inside the flat.

"Then he came back outside on to a little ledge, then lowered himself.

"He was dangling for about six seconds then he just dropped."

Another witness, who asked not to be named, said she heard the man shouting that he was going to jump.

Others say they heard him shouting and swearing before falling.

An inquest into his death will be opened at Teesside Coroner's Court this afternoon. more

Teenager 'hanged herself after row with parents'

Police said they were not treating her death as suspicious and had passed on the case to the coroner.

A spokesman for South Central Ambulance said two response vehicles and one ambulance were dispatched, adding: "The victim was believed to have been in an emotional state."

A neighbour in Carter Close, who did not want to be named, said: "I saw all the ambulances and doctors here outside the house.

"I saw them bring somebody out of the house and they were pumping down on her chest. "It is quite a close-knit community around here and this will have shocked and upset many people. It is a complete tragedy."

A post mortem examination is due to be carried out today to establish the cause of death.

Thames Valley Police said the death was not thought to be linked to a similar incident in nearby Wokingham, Berks. more
