So I am applying for a job at a close by education center where I will, hopefully, be a tutor over the summer. I have to email the center director with a resume but here's my problem, my resume is terrible. Throughout High School, and most of College (I am a Senior now), I never really stood out as a "genius" student nor involved myself in any after school activities (yes, I do regret not being more involved but that was a different me back then). So if I did type of a resume, there would be little to nothing on it. Despite the empty resume I could type up, I am thinking about just typing a short essay about myself and why I will be great at tutoring. I know for a fact that I will be able to help kids (from elementary school to high school) with their homework, give them study tips, prepare for college, and just help them out with anything. Like I said, I am not the sharpest tool in the shed nor am I the dullest. So do you think my idea will bring in positive results? And will the director even be interested in reading something other than a resume? If the director does want an interview I am fine with that since I communicate better verbally than writing. Any help would be appreciated. moreResolved Question: Any recommendations for a durable laptop to use with elementary age students?

I am an adult now. When I was in elementary school I had a teacher who singled me out constantly. I was sent to the principal's office daily for things like tying my shoes in unusual knots or walking on the wrong side of the hall after dismissal. She called me stupid and told my parents I had a learning disorder, costing them hundreds of dollars in testing only to find that I had mild ADD (and, come on, all kids have ADD to some extent) but was intelligent. She insisted on making me work with a counselor during class hours but lied about it: she would stand me up in front of the class announcing that I had to go to see my tutor just to humiliate me. Then she would not put in the effort to explain to me what I had missed so that I had to learn everything (mostly math) on my own. She frequently contrasted me and another student, making me the example of the imbecile and him the genius. It's sad but all of this has had a permanent affect on me. I have never recovered my self esteem and am terrible at socializing. I can't bring myself to put in 100% effort at anything because I'm terrified that even the slightest shortcoming will indicate that I'm stupid. I hate what that ***** has done to my whole psyche but I also recognize that I am WAY too sensitive about it. I want to get over it, truly, but I don't know how. Anyone else ever deal with something like this? moreResolved Question: What did you do to get into USC/UCLA?

I'm an African American Student who has a 3.6 unweighted GPA, and took the ACT, but Scored a dismal 23!!!?
I am junior currently in three AP classes. AP Calculus AB: I have a B, AP Us History: I have an A, and AP English Lang: I have an A, each are these grades are by the semester. I believe I can get a 4 or 5 on Ap Us History and Ap Calculus, and possibly a 3 or 4 on AP Language. I plan to take three subject tests: Math 2 C, US history, and possibly Spanish. I have done 50 hours of community service. I am an CSF, volunteered on a political campaign for the city council, and tutored local kids in an elementary school. I also am a varsity letterman for football and track and field. The problem that I have is that my ACT is TOO LOW. I received a dismal 23, and am seeking to get a 28-30. I got a 25 in math, 24 in English, 21 in Reading and Science. I am good at math but the test I took this month seems hard. My friends said the same thing about this particular test. On practice tests I usually get 27-30 for math and 28-30 in English, 26 reading , and 24 in Science. I seek to get a 31 on the Math and English the second time around, a 26-30 on reading. I just figured that I read three passages fully and get all the questions right, and just guess on the fourth passage, I can get a 30, but I'm aiming for a 27 or higher, and on the science I seek to get a 23-25. I'm not good at science, but hopefully I can imporve by 4 points. I am afraid that becuase of my low scores I won't be able to get in UC Berkely, UCLA, Stanford, USC, Duke, Goergetown, NYU, Chapman, Boston College, and other colleges I seek to go to. My weighted GPA is about a 3.9-4.0. What are my chances of getting a 28-30 on ACT in june, and my target goals already listed?? moreResolved Question: What kind of tutoring do korean students want?

I have a scholarship essay due in 2 hours and need help with final proofreading. The prompt is "What does your chicano/latino experiences mean to you and how can achieving you educational goals help you contribute to the latino community?" I only need editing for the SECOND PART but i will post both parts to see if i am answering the prompt well. here it is: PART 1 My Chicano experience has been a source of joy and direction, but also a real struggle: I’ve tried to forge my own identity from Mexican and mainstream U.S.A. cultures, and have confronted problems and obstacles along the way. These days, I’ve somehow learned to bridge the two cultures, which has helped me define who I am as a person. This process has also influenced my decisions to pursue a higher education and give back to the Latino Community. Being the only U.S. born person in my family has been difficult for me, since no one was equipped to guide me through the U.S. practices and values that I would encounter in daily life here. I was awkward with the culture around me because it differed from the culture I practice domestically. As I grew older, I began to move further away from the culture my family had taught me. As I exhibited more “gringo- like,” behavior, my family became unhappy with my choices. I was reprimanded and ridiculed for everything from the lack of salsa on my tacos to linguistic mistakes in my Spanish. I began to feel confused as to why I was deemed as a cultural traitor for letting go of my culture to adapt to the much more prevalent culture outside of my home. My predicament was similar to the one Rodolfo Gonzales depicts in his poem, “Yo Soy Joaquin,” where the narrator has an internal battle between conforming to mainstream American culture, and attaining a “full stomach,” or staying “hungry” by keeping his Chicano soul. During my sophomore year in high school I began to look for answers to why my experience as a Chicano had been so frustrating. I realized that I could not properly fit under any ethnic or cultural label and I didn’t have to. No label will ever able to fully “explain” me or my experiences. My goal is to promote this philosophy amongst the Latino community, particularly youth; I have already begun. During the fall I worked for a non-profit organization, Bay Area Community Resources, as an after school youth leader overseeing 15-20 ESL students at Global Families Elementary in Oakland. In my current position as an academic tutor at Fremont High School in Oakland, I work with a diverse student body, 40% of whom are Latino. These types of positions are fulfilling to me, and I’m planning to continue working with youth. PART 2 I'm currently working towards receiving my Associate of Arts degree in Sociology at Chabot College. After completing the requirements for this degree I plan on transferring to San Francisco State University and pursing a Bachelors Degree in Sociology. My main goal is receive a Ph D. in Child Psychology and work as a youth counselor. By achieving my educational goals I want to become a new paradigm of success for the Latino community, and hope that with my achievements I could inspire youth to do the same. I will effectively assist Latino youth by guiding them through the same struggles I had to deal with, such as the cultural clash that often occurs when an adolescent spends the majority of their life in a region foreign to their parents and has to learn to satisfy both cultures simultaneously. I’m baffled by the decline of academic performance and drop out rates amongst Latino youth. Often when immigrant families arrive in the U.S.A. the most accessible jobs are those that are physically laborious. The mental burden of these jobs undermines a parent’s ability to provide emotional and academic support for their children. I want to help Latino youth with their education goals and facilitate their transition by helping them adjust to the cultural differences they will experience. I’m confident I can impact the Latino community by providing Latino youth with the tools they will need to prevail. I have learned to triumph over the obstacles that come with being a Chicano and will teach Latino youth to do the same by applying my experiences as a Chicano and utilizing my education to help Latino youth succeed. moreResolved Question: Is 22 years old too young to have a child?
I am 22 years old and I feel an intense urge to have a baby with my boyfriend of 2 years and friend of 14 years. The only problem is that my parents don't think it is "right" to have a baby at a "young" age and that being rich like they were is critical to giving your baby a good life. I am my father's only child, and he did not have me until he was 52 years old,! so he thinks I am waaay too young. I have always loved children and was babysitting by the 4th grade. I changed my first diaper at age 7. I have tutored children, and have volunteered caring for orphaned babies in Chile on a school trip. I REALLY want a baby! I feel ready and I am wondering what other people think about this. My boyfriend is ready as well, and said that he is willing to work more and support me fully (financially, emotionally, and spiritually) for as long as I want and need. Our Background: I am a college student, and have 2 years left until I receive BOTH my MA for Elementary Ed., and my BA in Sociology from an Ivy-League school. My boyfriend of two years who I have know since I was 8 years old works full time and makes decent money at a tile factory/store. We are both very smart, and very in love. We plan on getting married but we don't believe marriage is necessary to lovingly and properly raise a child, or to be complety committed to one another. Neither of us have eyes for anyone else, and this is unconditional. I think he is going to ask for my hand in marriage very soon. We may have a drink occassionally but do not go out to "party" or be crazy. We attend church regularly. We are completely committed to one another. During the summer, I work as a full-time nanny and make very good money. moreResolved Question: How can i tutor in the summer?

Autumn ******, of ***********, Iowa, has been accepted as the new child psychologist for the Sunshine Psychology Clinic. Autumn often recalls a favorite quote by Tori Amos, “Some people are afraid of what they might find if they try to analyze themselves too much, but you have to crawl into your own wounds to discover where your fears are. Once the bleeding starts, the cleansing can begin.” “It’s saying that we must accept ourselves for who we are before we can understand how to help ourselves get better. I want to help children see that they are wonderful people, no matter what has happened in their past,” she says. Sunshine Psychology Clinic welcomes new child psychologist, Autumn ******, as wonderful addition to the psychology team. Parents will find their once troubled children coping with their negative feelings so they can be happy, vibrant children once again. moreResolved Question: I was brilliant now stupid, is there any hope for me with my grades?
In Elementary and Middle School I was so smart, teachers used to love me I was an A and high B student, but when 8th Grade kicked off, I started slipping and I just didn't care anymore. my 9th grade year was horrible, I got C's in all my classes save for Geometry which I failed and went to summer school but I made an A over there because it was so easy (by the way I am in Pre-AP classes) Now I'm a 10th Grader and still making C's and now I have one B I'm struggling so hard and I give it my all, I go to tutoring, nothing is helping me, do you think it's because I am 2 years behind or do I not just apply myself as much? nothing seems to work :=(. Uh yeah JEDI27, my parents have been fighting alot and people have been harassing me over those 2 years and thank you for your answer you too confused :) moreVoting Question: How hard are Intermediate level foreign language courses?
I just found out that my university requires students to be proficient at the 202 level of the available foreign languages. How much more difficult are intermediate levels compared to the elementary levels? I'm taking French II currently at my university. And it is the elementary level (102) and my grade switches back and forth between a C and D, and that is WITH tutoring (both peer-to-peer and with my class' professor)) plus turning in any assignment plus any extra credit, while also spending personal time with the tutoring. I just feel like I'm going to end up stressing over the 201 and 202 french classes when I get there. (I already stress over the one I'm in now. It just irritates me because I feel like I'm not able to devote enough attention to the courses that actually deal with my major because my university is requiring me to learn about a foreign language that I will never need to use in life.) This C/D average in the french classes is like the "black spot" on my record cause I get A's and B's in all my other courses. So I'm afraid that once I have to take the intermediate french level this fall semester, I'll be dealing with a D/E average in foreign language. My mind just isn't meant to learn foreign languages lol moreResolved Question: How do I look for Dartmouth?

For SAT II I scored a 760 for World history, 800 for US history, and a 720 in literature. I've done three years of honors science (Physical science, Bio and Chem), one year of honors math (int. algebra), two years of honors English (honors 10 and honors American lit.), two years of honors history (world II, and US I) and one year of AP history (US AP). I have 2 years of average math, one year of average English, and I've completed French 5. I won't be taking math or science next year, in favor of taking AP World History, AP American Gov't, AP English, AP Psych, Honors Band, French VI, and AP European History. For extracurricular I'm president of the History Club, Vice-President of Student Council, Co-Editor of Clubs on the newspaper, Clarinet section leader (2 years) in the marching band, quartermaster (2 years) for the marching band, Historian for the Assembly of Student Organizations, a member of Key Club (volunteer work), a member of Quill and Scroll Honor Society (founded the chapter at my school), a member of National Honor Society (I'm running for president soon), a member of Tri-M Music Honor Society (running for Historian), President of Opus Bono Historiae (history honor society), a member of hoop band, member of Full Orchestra, a member of the symphonic band, a member of the concert band, I"ll be President of International Relations, am joining the yearbook staff for next year and was the creator of the Assembly of Student Organizations. I also do peer tutoring and volunteer at the high school library. I am also trying to start an after school cooperative between the elementary schools and the high school. For sports I have none, unless you count Marching Band, in which case I have 3 years, and will be trying out for Drum Major at the end of the year. I want to major in history, particularly Colonial America or Modern Ireland. Do I have a good chance to get in? My history teacher of 3 years tells me no, but I think he's just bitter about not getting in 41 years ago. I really love W&M, but since I'm not from Virginia... moreResolved Question: Elementary teachers or tutors, I need reading activities.?
I currently tutor two children in reading. They are in first and second grade. While I am not new to tutoring, I am looking for some fun learning activities to do during my sessions. I need them in comprehension. (I have quite a few for phonics, but if you have any in this area feel free to share.) One of my students reads great but her retellings are not anywhere close to her so called word calling capabilities. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. moreResolved Question: Something which may be elementary...?
hey guys, I was recently having a discussion with a friend who was explaining that he was frustrated over a certain student he is tutoring (entry level high school) who couldn't seem to grasp that a negative number multiplied by a negative number is positive. He gave me a blank look when I stated that realistically she raises a good argument, for two real negative numbers -a , -b ( a , b being positive) then (-a) x (-b) = (-1 x a) x (-1 x b) = (-1)^2 x (ab) we known ab is positive, however why is it that (-1)^2 is positive?? Can anyone prove this?? David Edit - I should have added Can anyone prove (-1)^2 = 1 To Isu420 - so you using the property that a negative x negative equals a positive to prove the property that a negative x negative is a positive?? I graduated college in 99'. I have a BA in elementary teaching. Im in NYC. Im 32, and i never had a fulltime perm teaching job. I subbed in 00 though 03 off and on and alittle in 04-5 and havent set foot in the school system since. I have been making money on the side teaching piano lessons and tutoring neighborhood kids. I dont have a license yet but im 1 test short of it. I passed 2 of them and did all the requierments. It was like pulling teeth to get all that done and pass the 2 tests. Jsut thinking about taking the last test freaks me out and makes me nauseaus and depressed. I like to help kids but once i get in a classroom with them i freak out and the kids are rude, nasty and dont want to work no matter how fun or how much rules i set. Its such a hard job in the schools and physically exhausting. It also gives you alot of mental trauma with the abuse the kids show towards you. I wish i can find a nice setting . I was thinking of leaving nyc and finding a pleasant teaching environment where the parents take interest in their children and show concern. Do you think i should just give up and find another career. ITs been 8 yrs off and on doing this and im just burnt out and i havent even really done it fulltime. I have a piano backround. What should i do with my life now? have i been traumatized and am i done? I just feel sickened by the fact of going in a class room or setting foot in one. BUT i love to help older HS students and look out for them. I like to mentor them. But i cant deal with 30 of them at a time. Is there any career that i can use my teaching degree and still help kids 1 on 1? Im all pooped out. PLease tell me what i should do next? How much should I charge? what should I put on my flyers and where are good places to post them? I may not be certified but I actually know how to tutor children thank you moreResolved Question: Possibly stupid question about salary, jobs, layoffs, and money...?
I just came across a FB Group from a large university, protesting the possible elimination of tuition waivers for graduate assistants with awards smaller than 33%. As this is a school I'd been looking into, I know that we're talking a little over 20k a year that these students would be required to either pay out of pocket or borrow. Sure, that WILL save money...or will it, when it results in many students dropping out, changing schools, or what have you? The other option to alleviate debt is to lay off faculty and staff. So with the obvious harm there, the former seems the better option at the moment...BUT, if the elimination of waivers causes enrollment to decline, wouldn't that lower the school's prestiege and funding, and eventually lead to layoffs anyway? My mother, who works as a Teacher's Assistant in an elementary school, is facing the possibility of losing her job over the public school's financial difficulties. Sure, a job like hers would be easy to cut as it doesn't seem ABSOLUTELY necessary, but she does quite a load of work for someone so seemingly unimportant...work in the main office, tutoring kids who have academic trouble, dealing with kids who have behavioral trouble, overseeing activities to ensure that all are cooperating, AND subbing for absent full teachers, as the district cut substitute teachers a while back. What, however, did the school NOT cut? Pay raises at the beginning of the calendar year! I don't see the logic in that. I suppose that little bit of extra money may be necessary to keep people on board under the increasingly dire conditions, but when giving raises is going to lead to layoffs in the future, why do it? I'd rather keep my job and the same salary...I'd even accept a lower salary, and that's actually the thought I had. Is there some reason that small pay cuts would not work? Take a little from everyone so no one person has to lose everything...It could apply to the public school as well as universities. If I'm a professor making, say, $60,000 a year, and have to reduce that by 10%, it's not going to absolutely kill me to lose $6,000. Yes, that could be paying a specific bill, that could be my yearly savings or whatever, but isn't it better than someone losing their job, or a grad student losing their $20,000 tuition waiver? Couldn't the grad assistants lose part of their stipend rather than their waiver? 10% of that, which could be anywhere between $600 and $1,600 per student, is probably not going to lose students. I think the likelihood of stability is much more probable if they simply take a small amount from everyone rather than force some out entirely. I realize there may be some legality issues with this, but surely there's a way to work around it. If someone REALLY has a problem with X% of their pay being cut, they can leave. There are plenty of unemployed folks to fill the job with the pay it offers. There must be some reason for this not to work. It's not like it's some brilliant idea that no one has ever thought of before, so there must be something I'm not considering...what is that? Why would this not be the simple and just method of maintaining stability for all? moreResolved Question: Why should we give money to the disabled who aready work?
So, I am curious as to why we should hand out money to disabled people even though they work. Someone told me that It's because I supposedly have better opprotunities then them. I really didn't. I myself have aspergers(social disability) and have done crappy jobs within the last year(im 21) while being a full time college student. So, I worked on my social skills and now I am a math tutor. My major is special eduaction elementary. I have sympathy for these adults...but not to the point where they are just handed a paycheck each month despite working. there really is no luck...only drive. If he works a low end job, he still gets paid! Shouldnt we give everyone who works a low end job money then? moreVoting Question: Yale? Or at least an ivy...?

I am tutoring a high school student in biology. I am an elementary teacher so this is a little different. The student seems to not be able to learn the vocabulary. Flash cards are usually a good way to learn vocab, but the student does not seem to learn from this. Does anyone else have any ideas of how I can tutor this girl on her vocabulary words. Oh and the student is really behind. She has over a 150 words that she needs to learn in the next month and a half. Makes me wonder about the teacher, but then again I am an elementary teacher! moreResolved Question: Has anyone had success with Sylvan Learning Centers and elementary age children?
My daughter does very well in school, but seems to struggle with Math. She's in third grade and I need to do something now before she ends up getting behind in Math completely. I want to get her a tutor, but by using high school or college students, you just don't know what you'll get, although I am sure some are good. I'm curious to know other's experience with Sylvan Learning Centers. And also, does anyone know how much it costs, just for tutoring in Math. She doesn't need help in any other areas. I've looked into Kumon, but we don't have on in our area. moreResolved Question: How do I become a tutor? Please help!?
Well, here's the point of this: How do you become a tutor? I'm 14 years-old, and in 8th grade. Next year, I'm going to be a freshman, and I'm going to do online courses to graduate early. I was thinking about tutoring little kids, possibly elementary students and kids who are in middle school. I think it might be better for them to get tutor from someone whose the same age as them rather than someone whose an adult. I know that some tutoring facilities won't hire me. But I am pretty smart. I get all As and I'm an extremely hard worker. My science teacher told me that taking 9th grade biology in high school would just be a waste of my time, so he told me to just take AP biology and all AP and Honor classes. Honestly, I'm doing tutoring because I want the experience to be with kids, I know I want to be a mom when I'm older and I want to become a pediatrican. I'm not a very "sporty" person, I use to be but now I'm more attached to work than sports. So on my college application, when they don't see sports I hope they'll see something better like tutoring or volunteer work. How do I start a tutoring job? Like what should I do? Put up signs? moreResolved Question: How Can I Literally Become Smarter? Please?
I have high hopes for the future. I want to go straight to University, and become a Pediatrician, Except.. I'm a major procrastinator in school, and I'm doing bad in every subject except French.. I think I might have ADHD, but I cannot get myself to do my work. I have trouble understanding some questions, and I suck at explaining things. I really don't want to ruin my life. Everything in highschool is so different compared to Elementary. My strong suit is English. Grammar and Spelling and all that.. But I suck at the things that really matter in becoming a Pediatrician. I have to be good at everything.. I'm thinking about taking Enriched English next year, but I'm barely passing Academically! My Elementary school Tutor didn't help one bit. Can anyone set me on the right track!? I hate sitting in class, and hearing someone answer something logically, and then think "Why didn't I think of that?" I used to be a straight A student, but clearly that has changed. I have tons of Exams next week, and I'm totally confused! Thanks. I don't want to sound vain, but I think I have the knowledge.. It's just applying myself. :( moreResolved Question: What did my crushes mom mean? ?
Last week I started helping and tutoring students at an elementary school for community service hours. My crushes mom works at the school, and last night my mom told his mom that I was at the school. Then she started asking why I go, what days I go, and the time I come. And she told me that she is still in the school when I get there. Then she was saying that her son needs help, and he stayed after school with his teacher until 5:00 on friday. I didn't get a chance to ask her, but do you think she wants me to help her son, or do you think she was just telling me in general that her son needs help? (My crush doesn't like me, so his mom is NOT trying to set us up.) moreResolved Question: What do you think she meant? 10 points for best answer!?
Last week I started helping out 3rd grade students at a nearby elementary school for community service. My crushes mom works at the school. Tonight my brother had a football banquet. My mom told my crushes mom at the banquet that I was at the elementary school last week. She started asking me what days I go and what time I come. Then she said that she is still in the bulding when I come to the school. The school is designed different. Instead of classrooms, they have pods. A pod is one huge room with separate areas for teachers and their class. There can also be more than one grade in the pods. Once I mentioned to her that I was in the 3rd and 4th grade pod, she told me that her son(4th grade) was in the pod too(there is one class for each grade that does get a classroom) and that he could use some tutoring, and yesterday he stayed after school with his teacher until 5:00. Even though she didn't come out and say it, and I didn't get a chance to ask her, do you think she wants me to help her son? Why do you think she was so interested? moreResolved Question: I want to privately tutor special ed students in elementary and high school. How do I start?
I taught special ed for 22 years and was a school counselor for more than 15 years. I want to transition into private tutoring in Southern NJ. I plan to contact the special education PTA's in my area. Any other ideas? What's the going rate for private tutoring at elementary and middle school levels? I do not have skills in the advanced maths and sciences. moreVoting Question: what colleges can i get into?
im a 10th grade student at a college prep academy. These are my averages by subject: 99% = Honors English 97% = A.P. World History and Geography 74% = Biology Lab and Lecture 65% = Geometry 53% = Spanish II my geometry average is usually around an 83%. the cutoff date for the end of the quarter was just at an inconvienent time and my teacher only had one test and one quiz that he could use to base our quarter averages on. i did poorly on one quiz, which normally wouldn't really make a difference because his quizzes dont usually count for alot but since there was nothing else to base my average on it had a very big effect. I really want to go to a very good college. I have great teacher's recommendations, am consistently told by my teachers that i am one of the best writers they have ever had in their class, on varsity cheerleading, debate, and i am very active in my school's newspaper. i am also a very serious piano student and (not currently but have) taught piano to a number of younger students. i am also involved in a free peer tutoring program at my school and on the side. I also love to volunteer in my community and am a very active part of my church. I love politics and writing. I want to go into broadcast journalism and international relations (maybe also something along the lines of public relations/business management), but on a completley different note i have also thought about becoming an early elementary school teacher. i really love helping people and giving to people, and one of my favorite things is watching people that i have helped in various ways succeed of find real happinness in life because they feel as though they are worth something. i honestly put 110% + effort into everything that i do and my only real problem is my grades. i try as hard as i possibly can but they dont get much higher. The ultimate dream of my life is to attend Georgetown University (i live for that place=) but i doubt it is a very realistic goal for me at this point (i'll keep on dreaming, however). what type of school do you think i should be looking for (more writing-geared) and what do you think is the best schools that i should be looking into that are still "brand-name" schools but aren't way out of range academically for me??? thanks*** moreResolved Question: How should I register? Republican or Democrat? I’m interested in a career in politics?
I am still young and confused about how I should register. Here are my views. After you tell me what I should register as can you tell me if you would ever support me in an election. I believe in lower taxes, I agree with a flat income tax and a flat sales tax. I also support a sales tax holiday to last thru the month of December to boost buying. I think that lower taxes and ax breaks should be used as incentives for companies to come back to the US and so that small businesses and entrepreneurs have a fair shot. I am a believer in capitalism with some regulation (health benefits, workers comp, and work hours obviously). I think that a good program would be a small business bond program where average Americans can lend money to government in secured loan with interests, so that that money can then be lent to small businesses but lenders would get money back with interest. I also believe that taxes should not control behavior but instead should be used as a way to receive revenue. On social issues. I believe that a civil union for any two consenting adults is a must but am opposed to calling it marriage because marriage is a religious ceremony. When it comes to abortion I strongly oppose it and believe that government money should not be used to fund abortions. I do believe though that it must remain legal but that people that do it should do it with their own money. I oppose GOVERNMENT funding of stem cell research and cloning. On foreign policy. I am against entangling alliances and I believe that our military resources should be used only for self-defense (Ex. 9/11). I also have my own philosophy called “western-hemispherianism”, where I think that the US should its private sector should instead negotiate and create jobs in the western hemisphere rather than in eastern countries like China and India. Doing so would weaken our political enemies and bring an end to the immigration crisis (the biggest reason why people migrate is lack of jobs). On that note I am strongly against illegal immigration. I support raids and deportation and the construction and investment in more border security. I believe in protectionist policies (tariffs) against companies that have jobs in eastern countries. On social security I oppose it except for helping those with disabilities and widows. I do not believe that retirees should be supported by the government but that they should rather have personal responsibility and save for the future. They should be able to use their money to invest how over they like. When it comes to welfare I believe that irresponsible parents and people who do not seek a job or an education. Welfare should be used and not abused. On energy I believe in investing in nuclear, clean coal, geothermal, solar, natural gas, bio-fuels, and the exploitation of OUR fossil fuels. I believe in energy independence. When it comes to health I think that workers should be able to choose to keep their own health insurance thru their jobs, purchase on their own. I also support legislation where hospitals and clinics can enlist their services in a database and where they promise to provide services to families that can prove that they have a wage of under $50,000. In exchange I would promise the hospital an annual $1 billion and clinics $4million (excludes cosmetic procedures and abortions). I support cancer research and AIDS research as well as autism research. Finally!Education. I think that the system needs to go through some serious reform. Teacher’s abilities should be tested by their respective states. States should also make legislation to not allow cell phone access in schools. They should also make contracts with internet service providers to make sure that all schools have access to the internet and that students have their textbooks. I am also a supporter of the voucher program for students who wish to apply for alternative schools. I also wish we had a program where students who graduate college/apprenticeship for example can receive a $1500 bonus after they graduate. I also think that cities should create local workshops paid by the government where students can go to and get tutoring free of charge by college students in certain fields (mathematics, literature). This could count as work study for college students while at the same time prepping elementary and high school kids. AND OF COURSE PARENTS MUST DO THEIR PART! sure unka dano moreResolved Question: Would you vote for me for governor of New York?
I would run as an independent with my own party.Tell me if you are republican, democrat, or independent? These are just some of my ideas…I am 16 years old but I want to pursue a career in politics. I want to create opportunities for small businesses with a new program that I would call “The Small Business Bond Program” where I would allow average citizens to lend money to the government which would then be lent to small businesses and entrepreneurs. In return citizens will receive their money back with interest. This is a two way investment. It betters the state’s economy and allows the lender to make a secure investment. I would set a flat property tax of 4% on all homes with a value of $2 million or less and a tax of 6% on houses whose value equals more than $2 million. For international companies (including companies that had previously left the US) that come to my state I would set their property tax to 0.3% of their total annual earnings. When it comes to sales tax I would create a sales tax holiday lasting the whole month of December where no sales tax is paid. This applies to taxes and education so I am placing it in between. I would create a program where students who graduate college/apprenticeship for example between (2009-2013) can receive a $1500 bonus after they graduate. On education I would focus on laws to strengthen school attendance. I would also make sure that all public school teachers go through state tests every four years to test their knowledge in their respective field. I also want an increase of $2000 for all teachers, firefighters, police, etc. I would make a program to work with a private internet service provider to make sure that all schools in New York have access to the internet. I would make sure that every student has access to textbooks. I am also a believer in vouchers for students wishing to attend alternative schools. There also needs to be legislation over cell phones in school. In my studies I have noticed that it plays a huge part in distracting students from school work. Parents must also take the initiative and make sure their children can receive the help they need (this means shutting of the video games). I also want local workshops paid by the government where students can go to and get tutoring free of charge by college students in certain fields(mathematics, literature). This could count as work study for college students while at the same time prepping elementary and high school kids. When it comes to social issues I believe in civil unions for consenting adults but hold the belief that marriage is a religious ceremony. On abortion I think that the number of abortions should be lowered as I disagree with it. I would do that by creating programs to aid mothers morally and financially during their birth and 1 year later, during which they must find a job or prove that they are attending school of some type. I also support legislation where hospitals and clinics must educate the mother about the abortion process and its side-effects before practicing it through visual demonstrations, etc. moreResolved Question: Would You Hire Me? Why do a Few "Men" give All a Bad Rep?
I am a male who really enjoys being around kids. They're just great. I'd love to make some extra money babysitting but I have had no luck. I have tried getting the word around, even placed an add in the newspaper. Tried craigslist and sittercity.com. I am a college student majoring in biochemistry. I am starting medical school in 2010. I am intelligent, have held a steady and regular job since age 14, tutored 2nd-4th grade children at the local homeless shelter for 2.5 years now (not paid). I have 3 years experience wih special needs children as well because I have volunteered at the special needs elementary classroom. I have also babysat family members (not paid). I just feel like I was female, my phone would be ringing off the hook for babysitting jobs. Hi, I am a high school student and I was wondering if any of you could help me in perfecting my resume or provide me with any advice to get into college. With that being said …. I go to school at University High School in Irvine California, one of the top-ranked public high schools in California. Aside from being academically vigorous and challenging, it is also home of possibly 2000 Asian Americans. All of whom possess similar characteristics; musical instrument, solid grades, good SAT /AP scores, athletic sort(s), and community service hours here and there. I was wondering if you had an advice on how I would be able to stand out amongst thousands of clones. Now a little about myself. I am Taiwanese, as well as 1/16th Hispanic. Weird, yes, i know. To be honest, I am nothing close to a stellar student. I have poor grades, a 3.49 weighted GPA through my freshman and sophomore years. This year, my junior year, I am currently juggling a 4.0 weighted GPA. Last year, I took the AP Exam for US History and received a 5, but scored a low 680 on my SAT2s. I’ve taken the SAT2 for Chinese and Math Level 2, and received 800s on both. I’ve also scored a 2300 on my SAT 1. However, in my first semester of sophomore year I received 2 C’s (one in APUSH and another in Algebra 2). I managed to raise my APUSH grade to an A- the following semester, and my math grade to a B. Here are some of the school activities that I am involved in. I have been part of Student Council for 3 years. I am the Club President of Fiddle For Fun. Fiddle For Fun is an organization that I started this year that provides free tutoring opportunities at local elementary schools. It also helps fund raise with the principals of these schools in raising money to buy school supplies. (I’ve organized a jog-a-thon, a mini marathon where students gather pledges on the # of laps they run and all donations benefit the school). I am also the a board member of Model United Nations, Mock Trial, as well as the VP of Kiwins and Save Darfur! I’ve been part of the school orchestra since freshman year, and played basketball and wrestling for the school team. I am also a writer for our school newspaper and magazine. Here are some of things I participate outside of school. As I stated above, I am part of the school orchestra. I play the viola. Since freshman year, I have participated in the All-State Orchestra, All-Southern Orchestra, as well as the All-National Orchestra. This summer I had the amazing opportunity of being invited by IYCA (a local orchestra) to play in the Summer Beijing Olympics. I toured Seoul, Korea as well as Beijing, China playing my viola at various locations, including the Great Wall of China and at the Opening Ceremony. The summer of my freshman year, I spent a few weeks in Taiwan teaching English to its native speakers. I traveled to Mexico as well as Ecuador to help build homes either as part of missions or leadership programs. I will be going to India this winter break for a week apart of IYCA to spread musical awareness to the less fortunate and teach natives the basic fundamentals in learning how to read as well play a musical instrument. Along with IYCA, I have helped raised thousands of dollars to purchase violins that will be given to natives in India who possess a keen interest in learning the art of music. I also published 2 short children books, in Mandarin and English. I am a member of T.I.P, an organization that provides emotional support to victims who have experienced a life changing tragedy, such as a car crash. I’ve interned for a district attorney, and am currently interning at a sports agency company. Lastly, I attend church every week, and am part of my church choir as well as its monthly visits to a nursery home. That being said, I need your help. I am not in my top percent of my class, and do not have impressive grades. I would like to pursue a career in business management. I want to be able to go to a top-notch school, such as UPENN even if its just for undergrad. It would be nice to make my parents proud. If you had any advice, please, please let me know! Thank you! moreTutoring Elementary Students Article
Weighing coaches' accountability is delicate, debatable issue
"It's the tutoring system, the home support (the players) get. It's admissions saying to the coaches, 'This is what the kid is going to need.' It's the faculty.
"To pin a number on a coach … is not seeing the whole. It's saying this coach has these supernatural powers that none of us possess." Kansas' Bill Self, another NABC board member, points to the inherent unfairness to many coaches at lower-budget schools. They have fewer resources to throw into academic support. "Some of the best jobs done in coaching are with teams that don't have the best records, and some of the best jobs done with student-athletes (academically) are at schools where the APR may not be quite as high but the resources aren't near as great as what they are at other schools," Self says. "Those coaches are getting it done in relative terms. moreDropouts get boost
Now, it's going to help members with tutoring, mentoring, academic and career counselling and scholarships and bursaries for "anything they can achieve," said Graham.
That includes help with primary and secondary school problems and grants of up to $5,000 a year per student for university and college courses and trades apprenticeship programs, said Shewchuk.
The plan calls for initial support for 100 members at an estimated annual cost of $300,000.
Developer Tom Whealy has provided Horizons with $300,000 in seed money for the first year, said Shewchuk.
Graham said the campaign is off to a good start with about $1.7 million already in hand.
The Boys' and Girls' Club Foundation has provided $1 million in funding and another $700,000 has been transferred from an old scholarship and bursary fund administered by the club, said Lynne Cram, chairperson of the campaign. more
